Green Gardens
A popular place to see the island's flora whilst on holiday in Mauritius is the Jardin des Pamplemousses, which boasts more than five hundred plant species. The garden is in the capital city, Port Louis, and has plants from all over the world such as Chinese camphor trees and Philippine breadfruits. The Jardin des Pamplemousses (meaning Garden of Grapefruits) is home to medicinal plants and botanical studies, and is also a beautiful place to visit whilst on a Mauritius holiday, particularly if you are a keen gardener.
This garden is just a fifteen minute drive south from Le Canonnier, a Mauritius hotel with sixteen acres of colourful gardens, making it a perfect place for someone with a horticultural passion. Le Canonnier has charming walkways that cut through blue ponds and lush bushes, and lead to a stunning shoreline of bright sand and clear sea water - a paradise for relaxing on your Mauritius holiday.
The Shandrani is another Mauritius hotel closely associated to gardens.
Located in the south of the island within easy reach of the airport, the hotel complex is set amongst award-winning tropical gardens. You might enjoy them as you relax in the spa, or when you take a stroll around the tranquil grounds. If you're the type that likes cutting up a well-kept lawn with a club, the Shandrani can offer free unlimited access to the golf course for the duration of your Mauritius holiday. The Shandrani course is well tended to, with nine carefully shaped holes set against a beautiful backdrop of the lagoon and the forest. There are even complimentary group lessons to get you started. If you'd prefer to experience a new way of enjoying the ocean, there's a kite surfing school and sailing club. There is also a choice of three beaches to try during your stay.
Coral Gardens
As well as the rich flora on the land, the main attraction of a Mauritius holiday is the abundant wildlife you will discover in the sea. Scuba diving is a popular activity on the island, allowing you to get close to the vibrant reefs around Mauritius, and play with the colourful fish. You will be amazed at what you can see just a few metres from the beach, and snorkelers will have plenty to see without strapping on a tank.
You'll be able to try SCUBA at all the Mauritius hotels, many of which have their own dedicated dive centre where qualified instructors can teach you to feel at home in the blue, as well as explaining the array of sea life encountered on a dive. The sea around Mauritius has excellent visibility allowing you to see species such as Moray eels, octopi, and many tropical fish.
One dive site is known as 'Japanese Garden' because it appears to have been sculpted into tiers and terraces. It is an area of reef teeming with fish and with many types of coral; you may see rays here, and occasionally a shark might visit the garden too.
